Description

The Cigar City. The year is 1898. Young Cuban rebel Salvador Ortiz and his family have escaped the hardship of war-torn Cuba, but the union halls, cigar factories, and dark alleys of Tampa are filled with violence and vendetta. Salvador must defy constant labor strife and deadly corruption in a one-industry town known for backroom cockfights, street thugs, late-night abductions and mass production of the world's best hand-rolled stogies. An ideological battle for control of the cigar industry tests Salvador's self-respect and love of hard work as he fights to abandon his rambunctious, outlaw past and lead his proud Cuban family into a colorful immigrant society. His wish for a peaceful life as a husband, a father, and a man of dignity is threatened by a lawless underworld and a cultural conflict with a dangerous, bloody history.

Summary: "The Cigar Maker"

"The Cigar Maker" is an outstanding read. I thoroughly enjoyed Mark Carlos McGinty's latest work, and have been inspired to revisit his earlier endeavor, "Elvis and the Blue Moon Conspiracy". Mr McGinty has a remarkable gift for storytelling, and I highly recommend this book.

Summary: "Captivating history"

McGinty's novel is a thoroughly captivating history of US - the Americas and each of us - that is still relevant today.

He weaves a single thread from key contrasting rebel characters who are life long friends on the same journey with different destinations. They travel the turn of the 20th Century to experience revolution, immigration, labor strife, early capitalism, lawless politics, influence peddeling, and more. During their intriguing journey we also learn their customs, social life, corrupt gaming, and some great cultural cuisines and classic cigars that typified life in those days ... and still today. The key characters even survive an unwanted "vacation" in a jungle before their unfinished purpose in life is complete (a suprise and stark reminder of my personal experiences in Panama and SE Asia).

"The Cigar Maker" reinforces, with lots of color, much of what we're taught about our American History then. Yet I could only imagine much of that turbulent history repeating itself today - Rhowanda, Venezuella, Sudan. There are lessons for us all- mankind. But then in his final chapters McGinty leads the reader to the biggest lesson for us all - as individuals. One of the key characters finds it at the end of their journey. You'll find it too. Great read!!!

Summary: "A Great Story"

A short newspaper story from the history of Ybor City, Florida was all the spark Mark Carlos McGinty needed to spur his imagination into weaving The Cigar Maker. His fictional tale of colorful characters that make their way through the turbulent times of Spanish occupancy in Cuba to the cigar factories in Florida brings to light the fight and strength of immigrants who will take on anything in the pursuit of a better life.
The many hours of research Mr. McGinty invested into creating this story pay off as he takes the reader into the streets, factories and lives of the Cuban cigar worker. Life in the humid climate of Florida surrounded by poverty, crime and violence, and at the same time, art, beauty and destiny.
An amazing story that brings to life a small and almost forgotten piece of history, The Cigar Maker will captivate you.

Summary: "Something for Everyone"

AWESOME BOOK! LOVED IT. COULDN'T WAIT TO READ MORE...I actually held down the 'Shift' key as I wrote that -- that's how much effort I put in wanting to emphasize those words. Seriously, what a great book to spur conversation. There is something for everyone. You can talk about history, you can talk about politics, you can talk about family dynamics, you can talk about cigars. This was a love story, a history book, an action book, an adventure book -- all in one. So interesting. And I liked how real the story was. It was all very believable -- like, this could actually happen. I liked how the family drama was on a realistic level -- yes, there was some drama, but it wasn't over the top. Something that's unique, different - yet relatable.

Summary: "A fine read, highly recommended"

From one tumultuous home to another. "The Cigar Maker" tells the story of Salvador Ortiz as he leaves Cuba at the end of the nineteenth century to find a better life in America. But he finds that the streets of Tampa are just as shady as the streets of Cuba, and finds that keeping his family together and strong will be a struggle no matter where he is, as he faces off with the clashes of culture and history surrounding him. "The Cigar Maker" is a fine read, highly recommended.
